What is Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數)?

Zi Wei Dou Shu — the "Astrology of the Emperor's Star" — is one of the most detailed systems in Chinese metaphysics. Traditionally attributed to the Song-dynasty sage Chen Tuan (陳摶), it builds a destiny chart from your exact birth data, mapping 108 stars into twelve life palaces. Unlike Western astrology's sun-sign simplicity, Zi Wei Dou Shu reads a personalised star map: which stars sit in which palace, and how the four transformers (四化) activate them, paints a remarkably specific picture of personality, career, wealth, relationships and life cycles.

It is often called the "Imperial Astrology" because it was historically reserved for the court. Today a free Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is available to anyone who knows their birth date and, crucially, their birth hour — the two-hour window (時辰) that most distinguishes a precise reading from a vague one.

How to Calculate a Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart

Casting a chart by hand is a multi-step art. Understanding the logic helps you trust the automated Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator above. Here is the classic sequence:

  1. 1

Convert your birth time to the Chinese calendar

Zi Wei Dou Shu is cast from the lunar (農曆) year, month, day and the two-hour birth hour (時辰). This is the foundation of every chart.

  2. 2

    Locate your Life Palace (命宮)

Starting from Yin (寅) as the first lunar month, count forward to your birth month, then count backward to your birth hour. The landing palace is your 命宮 — the anchor of the whole chart.

  3. 3

    Determine your Destiny Palace stem

The Heavenly Stem (天干) of the 命宮 is fixed by your birth year stem using the Five Tigers Dun (五虎遁) rule.

  4. 4

Set your Five Elements Bureau (五行局)

Combine the 命宮 stem and branch and read its Nayin (納音) value, which yields one of the bureaus: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6.

  5. 5

Place the Zi Wei star (紫微)

Using your birth day number together with the bureau, the emperor star 紫微 is positioned; this single placement determines the whole star map.

  6. 6

    Arrange the 14 main stars

From 紫微, the北斗 and 南斗 star groups are placed in fixed sequences across the twelve palaces, populating your main-star layout.

  7. 7

    Add the Four Transformations (四化)

Based on your birth-year stem, the four transformers — 化祿 (luck), 化權 (power), 化科 (recognition), 化忌 (obstruction) — fly into specific palaces, revealing where energy flows and where it sticks.

Enter your gender, solar birth date and birth hour into the calculator, and it performs all seven steps instantly — locating 命宮, resolving the 五行局, placing 紫微 and the 14 main stars, and flying in the 四化 — then our master-cited engine interprets the result.

The 12 Palaces (十二宮)

Each chart is a ring of twelve palaces, one for every domain of life. The stars inside a palace, and the palace's own quality, describe how that area tends to express itself.

The Four Transformations (四化)

If the palaces are rooms and the stars are people, the 四化 are the weather. Four transformers fly out of your birth-year stem and land in specific palaces, showing where your life gains momentum and where it meets friction:

  • 化祿 (Hua Lu / Prosperity) — flow, opportunity and pleasure; abundance enters the palace it touches.
  • 化權 (Hua Quan / Power) — drive, authority and control; you push results in that area.
  • 化科 (Hua Ke / Recognition) — reputation, study and gentle help; visibility and support.
  • 化忌 (Hua Ji / Obstruction) — attachment and refinement; the site of both challenge and deepest growth.

Reading where 化忌 lands — and how it can be balanced by 化祿 — is the heart of advanced Zi Wei Dou Shu interpretation.

Zi Wei Dou Shu vs BaZi (Four Pillars)

BaZi (八字) reads the interplay of five elements across four pillars and excels at timing and elemental strength. Zi Wei Dou Shu reads a full star map across twelve palaces and gives more granular, picture-like descriptions of personality and each life domain. Many students use both: BaZi for the season, Zi Wei Dou Shu for the scenery. Generate a chart here and compare it with your BaZi Four Pillars reading.
