The Feng Shui Compass (Luo Pan)
A Feng Shui compass — the luopan — is the practitioner instrument of the Yanggong and Sanhe schools: a magnetic needle set in concentric rings of Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, the Eight Trigrams and the 24 mountains, used to take a facing and place a cure. This guide covers how to choose one and what moves its price.

What Moves the Price
- ›
Larger diameter and more rings take more hand-work and cost more.
- ›
A solid brass face with hand-carved rings exceeds a printed dial.
- ›
Legibility of the 24 mountains and the smoothness of the needle matter more than ornament.
- ›
A piece consecrated through a rite carries what a factory dial does not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a luopan the same as an ordinary compass?
No. An ordinary compass only shows north. A luopan is a working Feng Shui instrument: a floating magnetic needle centered within many concentric rings of stems, branches, trigrams and the 24 mountains, read together to take a precise facing.
What size should a beginner choose?
For study and field use a compact face such as an 8cm luopan is light, portable and easier to read steadily. Larger professional boards add rings and precision but demand training and a stable hand.
Why do Feng Shui compass prices differ so much?
Price moves with diameter, the number of rings, whether the face is hand-carved solid brass or printed, the smoothness of the needle, the school, and whether the piece is consecrated. Rather than quote a fixed figure here, we show the current price live on the product page.
Is this compass consecrated?
Yes. The compass is consecrated through the Zhengyi liturgical tradition associated with Mt. Longhu, the same rite behind every talisman and instrument in the shop.
Can I take my own reading with it?
It is a genuine working tool, but a precise facing takes study. If you would like a reading done for you, the resident master offers Feng Shui and BaZi consultations.
Do you guarantee a result?
No. A luopan is a measuring and devotional instrument, and its placement follows traditional principles. DeHuiTang does not guarantee any specific outcome.
